Kristine Michael

Ceramic Artist, Arts Educator, Curator, and Historian

Kristine Michael (Dr) trained in ceramic design at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, under Dashrath Patel, and later at Aldermaston Pottery, UK, with Alan Caiger-Smith. Her formative years in Auroville and at Golden Bridge Pottery, Pondicherry, with Ray Meeker and Deborah Smith established a strong grounding in wood firing and stoneware glazes. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Sanskriti Award, Charles Wallace Trust Award, Nehru Fellowship, Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture, and the FICA Arts Research Fellowship supporting her PhD on nineteenth-century Indian art school pottery at JNU. Her work is held in major international collections. She was nominated as International Jury Member for the 2025 Martinsons Award, 5th Latvia Ceramics Biennale, Rothko Museum, Latvia. As a curator, her exhibitions include ‘Multiple Realities’ at Clay Arch Gimhae Museum, 2023-24, South Korea; The Serendipity Arts Festival, Goa 2019, 2021, 2024 and 2025 editions; ‘Whispering Clay’, a retrospective of Vimoo Sanghvi, at Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai and OED Gallery, Kochi, 2025-2026; and has received critical acclaim for her work across other national galleries and the India Art Fair. An active curator, researcher, writer, and educator, she is co-editor of the biannual MRIN: Indian Ceramic Art Journal of the Indian Ceramic Art Foundation and currently serves as Curriculum Leader of Visual and Performing Arts at The British School, New Delhi. She has written widely on ceramics across historical and contemporary practices, as well as on individual ceramic artists.
